INTEGRATING ENGLISH LITERATURE FOR LINGUISTIC DEVELOPMENT AND CROSS-CULTURAL COMPETENCE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION

Abstract

English language education has increasingly emphasized the development of both linguistic competence and intercultural communication skills to prepare learners for participation in a globalized world. While traditional language teaching approaches often focus on grammar, vocabulary, and communication practices, English literature offers a rich and authentic resource for enhancing language proficiency while fostering cultural awareness. Literary texts expose learners to diverse linguistic structures, contextual language use, creative expression, and cultural perspectives that contribute to comprehensive language development. Through engagement with novels, short stories, poems, and plays, students gain opportunities to improve reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills while simultaneously developing a deeper understanding of the social, historical, and cultural contexts embedded within the English language. This study explores the role of English literature in promoting linguistic development and crosscultural competence among students in English language education. The proposed literatureintegrated educational framework utilizes literary texts as pedagogical tools to enhance vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, critical thinking, communication abilities, and cultural sensitivity. By encouraging learners to analyze characters, themes, cultural values, and social issues represented in literary works, the framework facilitates meaningful language learning experiences that extend beyond conventional classroom instruction. The approach also supports the development of interpretive, analytical, and reflective skills that are essential for effective language use in multicultural environments. The study evaluates the impact of literature-based instruction on language proficiency, learner engagement, cultural awareness, and communicative competence. Findings indicate that the integration of English literature significantly improves linguistic skills while promoting appreciation of cultural diversity and intercultural understanding. Students demonstrate enhanced vocabulary knowledge, improved comprehension abilities, greater confidence in communication, and stronger awareness of cultural perspectives represented in literary texts. The research concludes that English literature serves as an effective educational resource for fostering both language development and cross-cultural competence, making it a valuable component of contemporary English language education.
